China, 1897 Red Revenue small figures surcharge 2c. on 3c. red, variety surcharge double, position 9, basic stamp position 9, unused with full original gum (the usual natural gum skips), deep colour, well centred within large balanced margins, slightly oxidised and a little sulphurised on reverse, small tone spot at bottom right, reperforated at foot. An eminently collectible example of outstanding appearance. One of the rarest of the Red Revenue varieties and the first example to appear in auction in nearly eight years. Chan 84q.
