Lot 1389

Treaty Ports: Canton, 1838 (6 Sept.) entire letter from Canton to London (14.2.39) "p. 'Parkfield'" showing "India Letter/Hastings" framed h.s. in black, cancelled by red "Crutched Cross" inspector's mark, replaced on reverse with a correct "Ship Leter/Hastings" framed h.s. in red, with adjacent a second "India Letter/Hastings" framed h.s. in red (different size, struck in London) that was first applied (incorrectly) and again cancelled by red "Crutched Cross" inspector's mark, rated "4/-", very fine, very rare and probably unique cover illustrating two "India Letter" errors that were anulled by the inspectors with "Crutched Crosses". An important exhibition item. A similar cover from the same sailing with only the first cancelled "India Letter" handstamp is illustrated in Robertson's History of Ship Letters of the British Isles. Ex Norman Bennett.4.
Estimate HK$ 40,000 - 50,000

Misapplied "India Letter" handstamps were occasionally spotted by astute clerks working at the Ship Letter Office, who in turn applied the correct "Ship Letter" handstamp. In very rare situations, the clerk applied a red "Crutched Cross" to nullify the incorrect handstamp.

Realized HK$ 172,500
