Lot 156 P China, Small Dragon 1ca. imperforate plate proof in green on thin vertically laid paper, block of four with sheet margin at left, 3ca. imperforate plate proof in mauve on thin wove watermarked gummed paper, block of four with sheet margins at right and foot, and 5ca. imperforate plate proof in olive-yellow on wove unwatermarked ungummed paper, block of four with huge sheet margins at top and left, excellent colours, large to enormous margins, very fine and an outstanding group, the 1ca., which is particularly rare, has the typical suffusion associated with the one proof sheet pulled on this paper, and the 3ca. has light tones.

Lot 158 P China, Small Dragon 3ca. imperforate plate proof in mauve on wove unwatermarked paper, block of four with 10.5-13.5mm. sheet margins at left and top, bright colour on fresh white paper, contrasting impressions between the first and second vertical rows, extremely fine, diagonal crease in top left corner of sheet clear of stamps. A great rarity.

ONLY FOUR BLOCKS OF FOUR OF THE 3 CANDARINS ON UNWATERMARKED PAPER ARE RECORDED. THESE ARE BELIEVED TO BE THE LARGEST MULTIPLES. INTERESTINGLY, THERE WERE NO SUCH EXAMPLES IN THE BECKEMAN COLLECTION.

The imperforate sheets of the 3 candarins were meant to be used for the "Formosa" overprints.

Lot 168 o China, 1885 Small Dragon 5ca. olive-yellow, block of four, variety imperforate vertically between stamps thereby containing two horizontal imperforate between pairs, dazzling colour, well centred with all perforations intact, cancelled by Peking seal in blue, slight colour suffusion in corners of three stamps, very fine and an astonishing block of immense rarity. Chan 18d.

Lot 185 China, Small Dragon cover : 1892 (30 July) registered envelope to Copenhagen, Denmark (14.9) bearing 1885 rough perf. 12½ 5ca. and 1888 perf. 11½-12 1ca. and 3ca. pair and single, the first two stamps cancelled by seal in blue, and the 3ca. stamps cancelled by "Registered" framed h.s. in blue, with another strike on reverse, matching "I.G. of Customs/Peking" double-ring origin d.s. and "Customs/Shanghai" double-ring transit d.s. (4.8), in combination with France 25c. pair cancelled by "Shang-hai/Chine" c.d.s. (5.8), another strike of which ties the 3ca. pair, with "R" framed h.s. in red also tying the 3ca. single, showing "Ligne N/Paq. Fr. No. 6" octagonal d.s. on reverse, very fine and highly appealing Small Dragon registered cover sent at the 15 candarins foreign single rate (9ca. postage + 6ca. registration). Chan 18-20.
