Lot 1609 Hong Kong, Davis Correspondence : 1868 (28 Dec.) envelope (embossed "North China Insurance Company/Hong Kong Agency" imprint on flap) to Mrs. James Davis, London (8.2.69) "per Ellora via Marseilles" bearing 2c. wing margin example and 30c., cancelled "B62", with "Hong Kong" origin c.d.s. on reverse, rated "1/4", fine, extremely early cover from the Davis correspondence.

The correspondence between James Davis, who was based in Hong Kong and Shanghai for the North China Insurance Co., and his family mainly in the U.K. represents one of the great correspondences in all of philately, offering its own perspective into the postal history of Hong Kong in the latter part of the nineteenth century.
