Treaty Ports - Canton, 1839 (11 Sept.) "Official Public Notice",of the British blockade of the River and Port of Canton.
The text reads:
The High Commissioner and the Governor of these Provinces having publicly forbidden the regular supplies of food to Her Majesty's Subjects: having commanded the people to fire upon and seize them whenever they go on shore to purchase provisions, and certain of Her Majesty's Subjects having been actually cut off.
Notice is hereby given that it is my intention at the requisition of the Chief Superintendant of the Trade of British Subjects in China to establish a Blockade of the River and Port of Canton. And Notice is hereby further given that none other than Vessels actually within the Port or Foreign Vessels entering within six days from the date hereof will be allowed free egress till the Blockade be declared raised.
Notice of the Blockading Force will be hereafter promulgated.
Given under my hand on Board Her Majesty's Ship "Volage" at anchor in Hong Kong Bay off the Port of Canton this eleventh day of September 1839.
