Lot 673 China, 1872-1936, an interesting selection of envelopes (11) and a front, including 1872 envelope from Yokohama to London bearing U.S.A. 3c (2) and 10c (3) cancelled by corks and two stamps additionally tied by "Yokohama/Japan" c.d.s., another stamp possibly missing, 1881-97 envelopes (7) from U.S.A. to Shanghai (2, both redirected to Japan), to Tientsin, to Nicolaesk, Eastern Siberia (2) and to Spain mainly franked with 5c (one is a postal stationery envelope), 1928-36 envelopes (2) from U.S. Air Force squadrons in China, Hong Kong 1904 K.E.VII 2c. stationery envelope registered (black reg. label) to U.S.A. uprated with values (4) to 12c., and Japan 1910 Military stamp 3s. on front, mixed condition.

Johnstone in Shanghai (and some in Yokohama and San Francisco), mainly bearing Junk issues but with some C.I.P. issues and "Republic of China" overprints, with an array of frankings and usages, including postage due, printed-matter, express and registered usages, instructional h.s., covers to overseas and a few incoming covers, with 1912 official envelope with framed "Sh'ai Local Paid" h.s.; 1919 envelope from India, 1920 envelopes (2) from Hankow and 1922 "American Association of China" printed card with "Shanghai/Local Post" c.d.s. all bearing postage due adhesives; and 1923 large printed-matter envelope bearing Junk ½c. and 2c., a few faults as to be expected, a very interesting original collection meriting careful study (approx. 165 covers, plus 2 telegraph forms with stamps).
