Lot 2257 Macao, 1838 (9 Jan.) entire letter to Lisbon (27.5) "p. Viajante", showing crisply struck sideways "Macao/Coro. Marit.mo" oval h.s. (Webb type 4) in brown and matching handstruck "80" (reis), extremely fine and exceptional quality for this immensely rare handstamp.

THERE ARE APPROXIMATELY TEN EXAMPLES OF THIS HANDSTAMP RECORDED, THREE OF WHICH ARE IN THE POSTAL MUSEUM IN MACAO.

We record the following examples of this elusive handstamp:

1: 1829 (19 Mar.) arrival on entire from Lisbon to Magniac & Co., Macau. Webb, p. 295. This is evidently erroneous - the letter was actually sent from Macau to Lisbon.

2: 1830 (29 Jan.) entire letter to Lisbon, handstruck "160". Galeria Filatelica de Barcelona, 31.5.94, lot 229. Ex Frederick Mayer.

3: 1837 (15 Apr.) entire letter to Lisbon "p. Resolucao", handstruck "40" overstruck "80" in blue on arrival in Lisbon. Cavendish, 6.3.03, lot 304. Ex Richard C.K. Chan.

4: 1837 (19 Apr.) entire letter to Lisbon "p. Resolucao", handstruck "80". Ex Frederick Mayer.

Lot 2258 Macao, 1839 (20 Nov.) entire letter from Macao to Chichester, England, "Care of Messrs Sanderson, Frye & Co., London" (13.3.40) "p. Steamer from Bombay, via Marseilles" showing "India" and on reverse "Calcutta/Ship Letter/Due" framed h.s. both in red, rated "2/8", fine, letter recounts the breaking off of negotiations between Captain Elliot and the Chinese Commissioner, the sailing of the "Thomas Coutts" to Whampoa in defiance of Elliot's edict, initial hostilities with the Chinese, the evacuation of the English residents of Macao, the removal of the English fleet to Tonghoo Bay and the writer's subsequent return to Macao for business. A fascinating historical letter from the beginning of the First China War.

(Webb type 5) in red, writer mentions decline in hemp prices and provides detailed shipping information for the U.S. and U.K. noting that the "Morrison" bound from Hong Kong to San Francisco just put in for repairs after having suffered damage from striking the Prutas shoal, with a postscript that "an English war steamer is telegraphed entering the Bay." The Macau Industrial Exhibition of 1926 opened on 7 November. Special stamps were overprinted for postal use from the exhibition site, which had its own post office, and were accepted as postage on both domestic and foreign mail when used along with this vignette.
