Lot 562 China, 1895 (15 Apr.) envelope to U.S.A (28.5) vai Yokohama (1.5) bearing Dowager 6ca., cancelled by "Tientsin" seal in blue, in combination with France "Chine" 25c. cancelled by "Shang-hai/Chine" c.d.s. (24.4), matching "Customs/Tientsin" origin and "Customs/Shanghai" (21.4) transit double-ring d.s. (on reverse), the 6ca. rate to the U.S.A. by a special accord between the French and Japanese Post Offices. Fine.

Due to the Sino-Japanese War, the Japanese Post Office in Shanghai was closed from late 1894 until July, 1895. During this preiod, the French Post Office took over the Japanese services to the U.S.A.

(on reverse), in combination with France "Chine" 25c. (corner crease at lower right from where stamp originally folded over), cancelled by "Shang-hai/Chine" c.d.s. (27.6). Very fine and delightful.
